Mom and I had finished dinner and were reading in the library when Asher returned.

We had our feet tucked under the same blanket, our backs pressed up against opposite arms of the couch, and we stopped every few minutes to read each other a line from our respective books. The lines I read from My Plain Jane were funny, whereas the ones Mom read, from Alastair Grande’s latest bestseller, were dark and brooding.

I glanced up at Asher, trying not to be too obvious since Mom was sitting right across from me. He ducked his head toward the back door and moved like he was going to disappear outside and stay out of our way.

My heart ached in that moment. Of course he felt the need to stay away while Mom was here. First of all, it was easier for me when I had company. I had the awkward tendency to forget others couldn’t see Asher and start talking to him. Second, Asher had been pretty reclusive, even for a ghost, before I’d come along. Standing out in the surf or hanging out at the lighthouse were activities that filled his soul.

And suddenly my jealous feelings earlier about him and Maryanne seemed even sillier. Of course he should hang out with another ghostly friend to give me and Mom space.

Mom put her book down and said, “Have we thought about researching Asher’s family?”

I looked at her, cocking my head in question. It was odd that she’d brought him up just as he’d entered the room.

Asher paused at the door, intrigued.

“Like … how?” I asked. Could Mom feel his spirit? I panicked for a split second.

“In my book, the main character just found out that the man he thought was his father all along, was his uncle, that the uncle had killed his father after—” She cut her sentence short. “It’s a long story. Mainly, it just reminded me we don’t always know our family members as well as we think.”

I exhaled my panic. It was just Mom’s book that had made her think of Asher, not his presence.

My eyes widened, and I chanced a glance over at Asher. He tipped his head to one side. I looked back at Mom. “You know, that might not be a terrible idea.”

Mom snorted. “Thanks.”

“You know what I mean.” I laughed. “Let’s look into that tomorrow, first thing,” I said, checking my watch and realizing it was almost time for bed.

Asher gave me a salute before disappearing outside.

“This Alastair might write fantasy novels, but he sure knows his mystery twists.” She tapped the page she was on. “The uncle read a prophecy about the boy, and he knew there was a chance he would have these insane powers. And on that slim chance, he killed his own brother and his brother’s wife so he could raise the boy himself, as his father. And the main character has just figured out that he’s been using him for his own twisted agenda instead of what the prophecy foretold he would do.
